Taras Vysotskyi discusses agricultural cooperation with Hungarian counterpart István Nagy
29 August 2024 16:49

Аcting Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine Taras Vysotskyi met with the delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture of Hungary led by Minister István Nagy. The meeting was also attended by Deputy Minister Markiyan Dmytrasevych.

This is the first visit of a delegation from the Hungarian Ministry of Agriculture to Ukraine since the beginning of russia’s full-scale invasion.

The parties discussed cooperation, the situation in Ukraine’s agricultural sector, as well as plans and next steps for cooperation in agriculture between Ukraine and Hungary.

“We are very grateful for Hungary’s support and assistance. In particular, for the opportunity to export agricultural products through European ‘solidarity lanes’ after russia’s full-scale invasion. I am convinced that only in dialogue can we find a common vision of cooperation and resolve issues,” said Taras Vysotskyi.

He emphasised the need to discuss all steps with farmers so that decisions on the focus of the agricultural sector are agreed upon and supported by society.

According to Taras Vysotskyi, this year’s grain and oilseed harvest is expected to be 15% lower than in 2023 due to weather factors. At the same time, he said, the harvest will be more than needed for domestic consumption, and Ukraine continues to be an export-oriented country. He stressed that 87% of Ukrainian agricultural products were currently supplied by sea.

The Acting Minister also noted that the Ukrainian agricultural sector was actively adapting to EU rules and regulations at the legislative level.

In turn, István Nagy noted that intensive dialogue between the agriculture ministries of the countries, especially in the last two years, had helped to resolve many issues related to the export and transit of Ukrainian agricultural products. According to him, the situation with agricultural exports to the EU is currently stabilising. He also expressed his readiness to continue to assist Ukraine. István Nagy stressed that Hungary wanted to see Ukraine succeed and have good neighbourly relations between the two countries.

The Hungarian minister invited Taras Vysotskyi to visit Budapest and meet with local farmers. In addition, he invited him to attend a meeting of the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council (AGRIFISH) to be held in Brussels in October.
