On March 9, 2014 the Embassy of Ukraine to Hungary together with the Ukrainian Self-Government of Hungary held a wreath-laying ceremony at the Taras Shevchenko monument in Budapest.
This solemn ceremony marked the beginning of a series of events, dedicated to the celebration of the 200th birth anniversary of the Great Ukrainian Kobzar.
In his speech at the opening of the event Ambassador of Ukraine to Hungary Mr. Yurii Mushka briefed the participants on the current situation in Ukraine and stressed the solidarity with the Ukrainian people, as well as with the representatives of the Armed Forces and Border Guard of Ukraine, who keep their oath and courageously resist aggression.
The Head of the Ukrainian Self-Government of Hungary Mrs. Yaroslava Hortyani underlined that in the current situation the words of Taras Shevchenko are more relevant than ever.
The MPs of the National Assembly of Hungary, diplomats of the Hungarian MFA as well as the members of a number of Hungarian NGOs participated at the wreath-laying ceremony.
The participants sang Sevchenko’s “Will” and “The wide Dnieper roars and moans”, after which the holy liturgy was held in St. Florian’s Church by the priest of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
The event ended by the premiere of the song cycle of Roman Medentsi „Kobzar’s Poetry” in 4 parts performed by the solists of Transcarpathian Philharmonic as well as the poems of Taras Shevchenko in Hungarian language performed by the Hungarian artist Robert Garai.
